  • Moral Case for Legalizing All Drugs

Come join the Institute for Liberal Studies and The McGill Debating Union for The Moral Case for Legalizing All Drugs with Dr. Jessica Flanigan.

Dr. Jessica Flanigan’s research addresses topics such as medical paternalism, economic freedom, leadership ethics, and public health ethics. Her book, Pharmaceutical Freedom: Why Patients Have a Right to Self-Medicate, was published by Oxford University Press in 2017.

In this talk, Dr. Jessica Flanigan will describe and respond to five arguments against legalizing all drugs, including deadly drugs, addictive drugs, neuroenhancements, recreational drugs, and drugs that probably won't do anything at all. She concludes that any justification for drug prohibition could also be used to justify a range of other illiberal and harmful policies.

So public officials should respect peoples' rights to use drugs for the same reasons that they must respect people's rights to make medical decisions, reproductive choices, to engage in risky recreational activities, and to take personal and financial risks against expert advice in other contexts.

    Room TBA
