Karl McKinnon

I am pleased to join the Libertarian party as a candidate for my riding of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.

During the course of the campaign I have recognized that many of my fellow constituents feel as I do in that the influence and especially cost of our federal government has become too much to bear.

I am a graduate of St. Lawrence College's Marine Engineering Instrumentation and Controls program. Over the last 30 years I have worked in various industries in the instrumentation field within Canada and abroad, with my last position being a professor for SAIT in Calgary.
We've lived through some astonishing events in the last ten years and it is difficult to think of another time and place where this has occurred. The endless scandals, the growth of the taxation burden and the neglect of government responsibility in Canada have become severe. There is a growing cause for our party to restore a civil society.

When I approached the problem of policy making, I chose to keep the message simple and straightforward in keeping with libertarian ideals.
I have pledged to work towards legislation that:
1. Provides for recall of Members of Parliament that act in bad faith or break the publics trust.
2. Requires government to seek public approval for foreign aid.
3. Requires the government to likewise seek public approval for mega projects that would cost amounts in excess of 40 million dollars.

These are obvious reforms which many Canadians can embrace in light of what we have recently witnessed. Needless to say there are other reforms that could be implemented in the same spirit to make the government more responsible. I'm optimistic about our chances. With the recent threats of authoritarianism, and the renaissance of libertarianism in various countries, we have a golden opportunity to broaden our support and share our ideals.
